Director of Finance (Security)

OVERVIEW:

The Director of Finance is responsible for the annual financial planning, accounting, purchasing, payroll processing oversight, financial risk management, and budget management functions for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The incumbent oversees and manages the annual operating financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations, with supporting schedules, for multiple entities. They direct and ensure ongoing effectiveness of systems, policies, and procedures in support of the general accounting, financial planning and analysis, tax, audit, budget management, and key financial functions of the Museum.

REPORTS TO:  Chief Financial Officer

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Manages, monitors, and measures benchmarks for the financial and operating performance of the Museum. Directs, communicates, and monitors the museum's financial planning and budget management functions. Monitors and analyzes monthly operating results against budget; works in collaboration with leadership colleagues to make recommendations as to necessary adjustments.
2. Works in concert with CFO to lead the finance team on strategic finance and accounting initiatives, projects, and procedure updates. Updates, reviews, establishes, and implements short- and long-range finance and accounting plans that support effective operating procedures, organizational and department goals, and strategic objectives.
3. Proactively facilitates and fosters appropriate stewardship of organizational financial resources to achieve targeted outcomes; ensuring compliance and appropriate controls are in place.
4. Actively supports sound financial data governance practices and ensures that systems, processes, policies, procedures, and/or technology are in place. Establishes, maintains, and oversees the implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures in alignment with effective internal and external financial data management.
5. Manages the preparation and timely distribution of monthly and quarterly comprehensive organizational financial reports including GL close and financial statement reconciliations. Documents completion of month end, internal audit and other compliance work.
6. Oversees payroll processing, reporting, and system administration. Working in concert with colleagues in HR to plan, adjust practices, and ensure that payroll related procedures are administered consistently in compliance with applicable laws and museum policies in a timely manner. Shares HRIS/Payroll system oversight with the Director of HR.  Ensures internal controls are adhered to for financial functions.
7. Participates on the internal Benefits Committee. Assists in fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities for retirement, health, dental, vision and other wellness plans helping to provide financial oversight, analysis, counsel, education, and insights.
8. Assists the CFO with the investments and endowment management through responsibilities for reconciliations of investment activity. Responsible for accounting and reconciliations of endowment activity, investment accounts and applicable endowment reports for internal and external purposes.
9. Leads M-Team through financial audit process(es) and is accountable for meeting audit deadlines. This includes responsibilities for review, preparation, and reconciliation of Museum activity as well as oversight for audit work documentation and contributions to audited financial statements by finance team members. Liaison with external auditors working in concert with department colleagues.
10. Oversees tax planning and compliance. Works with external accountants and internal colleagues to complete filing of tax returns and preparation of supporting work papers. This includes 990, 990T, property tax, and related state filings for alternative investments.
11. Contributes to, develops, and/or provides appropriate updates and development of finance-related internal trainings. Assists in effective relationship management of financial vendors and community partners.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. CPA certification and/or MBA preferred.
2. Five (5) years' experience in a leadership capacity within the finance function; five (5) years' management experience in technical accounting encompassing complex source usage. Non-profit experience preferred.
3. Proven familiarity with activity/fund-based accounting concepts and systems. Demonstrated understanding of accrual accounting concepts and financial statement analysis.
4. Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Sound knowledge of other software applications and technology including Microsoft Office and related accounting and finance platforms. Must embrace learning new technology as needed to serve Museum's needs. Sound knowledge and abilities in complex spreadsheet applications and advanced formulas.
5. Understanding of financial regulations, laws and standard practices. The ability to motivate and retain diverse, skilled professional staff with expertise in such areas.
6. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and translate financial concepts and results to staff at all levels.
7. Requires mature leadership capabilities within a participatory management environment in addition to the ability to work independently and as part of the team effectively. Must value diversity and display openness to questions and to being a resource and mentor to others within the team.
8. Must have a rich understanding of educational learning environments, as well as the non-profit industry.
9. Demands the capacity to work in a fast paced, intense environment and the ability to multi-task and adeptly shift priorities.
10. Requires the ability to solve problems, negotiate and mediate, to be sensitive to differing viewpoints, and to be proactive and anticipate the needs of team members.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must be able to view highly detailed documents and prepare or manage financial schedules, reports and documents.
2. Must be able to communicate effectively and extensively via telephone, virtual, face to face and in large groups.
3. Must be able to tolerate heavy keyboard and calculator usage and extensive document, report and presentation preparation.
4. Must be able to navigate the museum facility and campus. Requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Some local and regional travel required for meetings and conferences; must be able to lift 25 lbs.
